Our Free Product Giveaway Saturday is one way we like to give back to the community. On the second Saturday of each month we offer one of our products for free when self-loaded (weather and inventory permitting). This event has become popular and it is nice to see some familiar faces along with new faces from month to month. Even better, we are starting to see more and more of these familiar faces during the week when they return to purchase our products. Check out the Free Product Giveaway Saturday pictures below. Monkey Hair Mulch® Giveaway | July 13, 2024
We had an excellent turn-out for our Monkey Hair Mulch® giveaway! One couple shared that they replaced all their landscape mulch with Monkey Hair and they loved it. They raved about this product as their pick-up truck was being loaded! And they were particularly impressed with how much better their landscape plants look with Monkey Hair versus other mulches. They also told us that it is really nice to walk-on. Lastly, this mulch was used to blanket all of their slopes and they had no signs of erosion in spite of heavy rainfall this past winter. Great feedback from a satisfied customer! Monkey Hair Mulch® rocks!

Nitro-Blend Compost Giveaway | May 11, 2024
In honor of Compost Awareness Week (May 5 – 11)
Our Compost Awareness Week giveaway featured one of our most popular products, Nitro-Blend Compost! It is a combination of Valley’s Best and Planter’s Blend so it provides the benefits of a manure-based compost that is safe to use with salt sensitive plants. It will improve organic matter, water retention, and beneficial microbes in the soil giving your plants an amazing boost!
A steady stream of organic fans showed up throughout the day to get this premium product that is rarely featured at our FPGS event. Earthworks was back by popular demand to sell compost tea.

Grower’s Mulch and Valley’s Best Compost® Giveaway | March 9, 2024
We had beautiful weather for our FPGS event that brought out around 200 participants to pick up Grower’s Mulch and/or Valley’s Best Compost® in March. Many participants came back multiple times taking advantage of the special loading terms available just for this event.
One first-time participant took the time to send a lovely thank you note to tell us how impressed she was by our operation and friendly staff. She also shared some photos (see below) and that she planned to come back to purchase our products to get her garden growing. Other participants posted social media stories to say thank you! We appreciate the feedback and are very happy to hear that our events are creating happy customers and helping the community improve the soil to grow great plants!

Earthworks was back to sell their freshly brewed Compost Tea to a growing group of gardeners that are loving the benefits of this easy-to-use product.
Monkey Hair Mulch® Giveaway | January 13, 2024
It was very cold at our January giveaway, but that did not deter participants from stopping by to pick up free Monkey Hair Mulch®! It was below 30 degrees in the morning and you could see the steam rising above the compost and mulch piles as you entered the yard. It was a beautiful sight!
The best way to help plants tolerate cold weather is to mulch them before the temperature drops. I am sure that many San Diego area residents will be doing just that after the soil warms up. Monkey Hair Mulch® is very light and durable making it easy to apply and great for controlling erosion and minimizing weeds. This SB 1383 compliant mulch has a lovely, brown color that looks equally nice in flower beds, around shrubs, in vineyards, and orchards.

California Native Mulch® Giveaway | November 11, 2023
Imagine getting two yards of our popular California Native Mulch® for just ten dollars! Now that is an amazing deal! It is a possibility if you stop by our Free Product Giveaway event on the second Saturday of the month. Attendees can drive away with two yards of our Featured Product if they bring a small trailer or pickup truck and pay a ten dollar loading fee (cash only during event). November’s Featured Product, California Native Mulch®, is great for controlling erosion and for use in large areas. Many attendees loaded up with this SB 1383 compliant mulch in preparation for the upcoming winter rainstorms. As always, Dr. K enjoyed talking with everyone and answering garden, soil, and landscape questions.

Valley’s Best Compost® Giveaway and Vermicast Compost Tea Sale | October 14, 2023
Valley’s Best Compost® is one of our most popular products and many San Diego area gardeners showed up at this giveaway to pick up some of this rich, manure-based soil amendment. We had over 120 attendees with 37 of them paying to get a truckload. This OMRI listed compost is a favorite among the organic farming community! Richard Futter returned with his Vermicast Compost Tea and knowledgeable gardeners took advantage of his great sale price. Dr. K was on hand to talk to attendees and answer their compost, mulch, and soil related questions. Another successful giveaway!

Grower’s Mulch Giveaway and Vermicast Compost Tea Sale | September 9, 2023

One of the highlights of the September FPGS event was the introduction of Earthworks International’s Vermicast Compost Tea for sale. The tea drew in some new participants with an awareness of the wonderful benefits of compost tea. Compost tea can be sprayed on the leaves (foliar application) for fast absorption of nutrients or directly to the roots via a soil drench also providing a boost to soil microbes. This sale was popular with savvy gardeners and we plan to have Earthworks back at our October FPGS event. Our Grower’s Mulch attracted a good turnout despite the hot weather and we appreciate everyone that attended.
Here are some details and benefits:
1. Can be diluted 5 to 1 ratio.
2. Compost tea can be used as a root drench and/or as a foliar spray. Both have benefits for healthy plants.

Saturday’s event drew in a steady stream of gardeners looking to get their landscapes ready for fall with our Monkey Hair Mulch®. This lightweight, fibrous mulch provides long-lasting coverage and it is great for use on hillsides during rainstorms. Attendees used many different sizes and styles of containers to self-load. About 55% of the attendees self-loaded and 45% paid to have us load their truck.

Our new product, Mini Hardwood Mulch, is introduced at our July FPGS event | July 8, 2023
The latest addition to our mulch product line made its first appearance at the July giveaway. About 80 customers showed up to try out our new Mini Hardwood Mulch. Its superior moisture holding capacity along with its uniform, tidy appearance make it a really good choice for San Diego area gardens. About 60% of the attendees self-loaded and 40% paid to have us load their truck. Dr. K also provided a tour of our Compost Operation during the event.

Raised Garden Bed Mix Workshop with Dr. K during FPGS event | May 13, 2023
Dr. K gave a special workshop during the May giveaway on using our Raised Garden Bed Mix (RGBM) with and without supplemental nitrogen. The workshop drew in participants from two local garden clubs in San Marcos and Valley Center, Brenda and Laura.
During the workshop, Dr. K discussed the best way to optimize RGBM and presented two garden beds which clearly showed the benefits of using supplemental nitrogen (see pictures below). Brenda and Laura plan to present this information to their respective garden club members and follow up with Dr. K in the near future. For more information on using our RGBM, check out Dr. K’s “Creating a Super Garden with RGBM” and “Make a Seed Starter Mix” blog posts in Dr. K’s Korner.
About ninety people showed up to take home the California Native Mulch® that was featured for the giveaway and Dr. K enjoyed meeting the guests and answering their questions. He was happy to note that he is starting to see guests at the FPGS events that have become regular customers which he also sees during the week.

Planter’s Blend Compost and Grower’s Mulch Giveaway | April 8, 2023
We hosted over 180 participants at our April giveaway! The response was so amazing to this special two product giveaway event that we actually ran out of Planter’s Blend Compost before it was over. After a very wet and extended rainy season, we were happy to see a sunny day and all of you! Dr. K gave a tour of our facility, discussed our products, and answered questions from our guests.

Grower’s Mulch Giveaway Pictures | June 11, 2022
The Grower’s Mulch Giveaway was well attended, even in the afternoon heat! It is always fun to see the creative methods our customers use to gather and transport their free product. Below are a series of photos of a regular SPV Soils customer and the methodology he used to fill large plastic barrels with Grower’s Mulch. He was able to fit six full barrels into his small SUV. He shared with us that he likes to use “gravity” to scoop the mulch into the barrels and then he stands on the material to push it down for maximum volume and minimal effort. We are impressed!

The Giveaway event this past Saturday was a great success thanks to all of you! We saw 44% more people than at our last Monkey Hair Mulch® Giveaway. Most of the participants self-loaded while getting some exercise, but we did have a few customers that paid to get a bucket-load full.

We had another successful Free Product Giveaway Saturday with about 50 participants! Thank you to everyone who came out and picked up some free Grower’s Mulch! As you can see from the pictures, many of you got creative using all sorts and sizes of bins to load up. We had requests to load at least 20 trucks with our equipment with some coming back for seconds.
