California Native Mulch^® is our best value! It is a blend of both fine (3/8” minus) and coarse (2-3” minus) compost providing the increased nutritive and water holding capacity of fine material along with the longevity and filtering capacity of a coarser organic mulch. Composted and cured for a minimum of 4 weeks to eliminate weed seeds and pathogens, this mulch is suitable for a wide range of applications including stabilizing and vegetating slopes for erosion control, weed suppression and water conservation on soil pathways, and for use as a mulch around trees, vineyards, shrubs and landscape ornamentals. Apply 3-4” layer of Cal Native to maximize weed control and moisture retention. California Native Mulch^® has the Seal of Testing Assurance Certification (STA) from USCC. SB 1383 compliant.

Grower’s Mulch is a long lasting and coarse mulch (2-3” minus) that has been composted and cured a minimum of 4 weeks and screened to produce a cleaner, organic mulch free of weed seeds and fine particles. It has a rich brown hue making plant and flower colors pop! Ideal for weed suppression, erosion control on steep slopes, water conservation, general landscape and orchard mulching and pathway stabilization. Apply 3-4” layer of Grower’s to maximize weed control and moisture retention. Available in bulk. Grower’s Mulch has the Seal of Testing Assurance Certification (STA) from USCC. SB 1383 compliant.

Monkey Hair Mulch^® is a premium composted mulch produced from locally sourced ground palm that has gone through a pathogen reduction process rendering it weed free. It is an excellent lightweight, water saving product with a rich coco brown appearance. Similar to Gorilla Hair, but a better value with a more refined look. Certified Playground Mulch is produced from 100% chipped wood and is free of contaminants. It meets all federal and state safety standards governing mulch for playgrounds, parks, schools and HOA common areas.  This mulch is ideal for school yards and children’s play areas under swing sets and jungle gyms. Apply 8” to 12” thick for best results. 

Hardwood Mulch is 2-3” minus made from mixed lumber. This mulch is an exceptional value for a premium product. Light brown in color, it is an attractive, longer-lasting option to composted mulches for weed suppression, moisture retention and pathways. Apply 2” to 3” thick for flowers and shrubs and 3” to 4” thick around trees for optimum results. SB 1383 compliant.

Mini Hardwood Mulch is our latest product! This screened mulch is 1/2″ minus in size making it perfect for creating a lovely, uniform ground cover to impede weeds and retain moisture. It has a pleasing, tidy and natural look created from tree branches, logs, and stumps. Mini Hardwood Mulch looks great in flower beds, around trees and shrubs, and on pathways. Apply 2” to 3” thick for flowers and shrubs and 3” to 4” thick around trees for optimum results. SB 1383 compliant.

Black Mulch is a 3” minus premium hardwood product with a dramatic color for making flowers stand out. Moisture retention, weed suppression and long lasting, it’s great for pathways and accenting colors in landscapes. For best results, apply a 2” to 3” thick layer for pathways, established flower beds and shrubs, and a 3” to 4” thick layer around trees.

Red Mulch is a 3” minus premium hardwood product with a rich color. It offers moisture retention, weed suppression and is long lasting for good value. It is great for pathways and adding colored accents to landscapes. For best results, apply a 2” to 3” thick layer for pathways, established flower beds and shrubs, and a 3” to 4” thick layer around trees. 

Brown Mulch is a 3” minus premium hardwood product with a warm, natural hue. Great for moisture retention and weed suppression, it’s also an excellent choice for pathways and adding an earthy-colored accent to landscapes. For best results, apply 2” to 3” thick for pathways, established flower beds and shrubs, and 3”to 4” thick around trees.

Nature’s Fines is an earthy brown, double-ground mulch suitable for a wide range of applications. With a powerful blend of 1 1/2″ minus coarser material and fines, this mulch provides invaluable organic matter to soil while maintaining all the great benefits the coarse fraction provides… weed control, slope stabilization, soil temperature moderation and moisture retention. Compare to competitors’ Forest Fines. Nature’s fines is an attractive, cost effective alternative that has quickly gained popularity with our customers and sure to enhance your landscape too! Nature’s Fines is produced from “clean” landscape greens, but it is not a “composted” mulch. SB 1383 compliant.

Mini Fir Bark is ¼” to ½” in size and a premium product with a reddish color. It is a good choice as a mulch for flowers, shrubs, pathways and ground cover. It will gradually decompose and add valuable organic matter and lower the soil pH for acid-loving plants! Apply 3” to 4” thick for best results.

Medium Fir Bark is 1” to 2” in size and is a beautiful premium mulch that provides a natural rustic look. Reddish in color and excellent for acid-loving plants, it looks great around trees, shrubs and large specimen plants. Its larger particle size allows this mulch to last longer than smaller sized barks. Apply 3” to 4” thick for best results.

Shredded Fir (Walk-on Mulch) is a rich, reddish brown color ideal for pathways, flower beds, perennial shrubs and erosion prevention on slopes. This product creates a nice, long-lasting, uniform appearance. For best results apply 2” to 3” thick for flowers and shrubs and 3” to 4” around trees.

Shredded Cedar is a light, loose, premium mulch with a fresh, earthy scent and a deep golden color. It mats down for a neat appearance and lasts longer than most wood chips due to the naturally occurring antimicrobial properties of cedar. Looks great in flower beds and is ideal for slope erosion control. Apply 2” to 3” thick for flowers and shrubs and 3” to 4” thick around trees maintaining a 6” mulch-free zone around the trunk.

Gorilla Hair is another one of our popular lightweight mulches with a pleasant, earthy scent and reddish color. This redwood mulch is a long-lasting product that mats down well to show off your plants and enhance the landscape aesthetics. It provides excellent erosion control on slopes. Apply 2” to 3” thick for flowers and shrubs and 3” to 4” thick for trees.

Valley’s Best Compost^® is an OMRI-listed and popular “go to” manure-based soil amendment for local farmers, landscapers and gardeners! It was developed to provide organic growers with a product that supports stronger and more vigorous plant growth through increased beneficial microbial populations. Incorporate a 1” to 2” layer directly into your garden bed or existing native soil. It is also excellent as a top dressing for existing or new turf maintenance. Broadcast up to a 1/4” layer directly on the surface of grass. Valley’s Best is registered with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) as Organic Input Material. SB 1383 compliant.

Planter’s Blend Compost– This plant- based compost helps clay soils drain better and sandy soils hold more moisture and nutrients. It has the Seal of Testing Assurance Certification (STA) from the U.S. Composting Council, and helps invigorate a soils microbiology. Incorporate a 3” to 4” layer directly into your garden bed or existing native soil. A 1” to 2” mulch layer of this compost on bare soil makes an excellent Compost Erosion Control Blanket (CECB) for preventing soil loss during heavy storm events. SB 1383 compliant.

Nitro-Blend Compost is a combination Planter’s Blend and Valley’s Best Composts’ that delivers the benefits of a manure-based compost while safe enough to use with salt sensitive plants, vegetables and turf. A superb top-dressing for rejuvenating turfgrass sports fields, lawns and groundcovers, Nitro increases soil organic matter, water holding capacity and beneficial microbial communities. Incorporate a 2-3” layer into the top 3-6” soil, or top dress turf and lawns by broadcasting a 1/4” layer directly on the surface. SB 1383 compliant.

Amended Topsoil is a blend of 50% screened sandy loam soil and 50% Planter’s Blend Compost providing a generous amount of composted organic matter to feed beneficial soil microbes providing a slow release of nutrients and improved soil structure. This product is ideal for replacing existing poor soils with low organic content or as a base for supplementing or creating custom blends of soil. Apply 3” to 4” thick or amend to your own specifications and planting depth.

Raised Garden Bed Mix is a basic blend of premium composts, washed sand, coco coir, pumice and gypsum. We strongly recommend applying a nitrogen fertilizer of your choice following the recommendation rates on the package at the time of planting and throughout the growing season to optimize plant growth and development. This blend is designed to slowly release a full spectrum of essential plant nutrients to complement the added nitrogen while providing excellent soil drainage, aeration and water holding capacity necessary for optimum plant health.

Custom Cactus and Succulent Mix is our custom-blend soil mix developed to provide an optimal growing environment for San Diego cacti, succulents, and caudiciforms. We combine our Planter’s Blend Compost with Pumice and Gold Decomposed Granite (Gold DG) for good drainage and moisture retention. This product will supply your plants with nutrients to help them thrive. We recommend supplementing with a balanced water soluble fertilizer (10- 30-20 NPK).

Bioswale 50 SPVS is composed of coarse washed sand, Planter’s Blend Compost and sandy loam soil. It provides excellent drainage and can be used as a planting medium for constructing bioretention basin and for growing succulents and drought tolerant plants. It is great for use around parking lots, multi-use housing developments and anywhere improved drainage is required.

Lightweight Rooftop Mix is our specialty blend of pumice, sand, gravel, and shredded bark for applications with weight limits needing good drainage. Great for green-roof installations where superior drainage is needed along with good water retention. This product is not stocked, but we will custom blend upon request. Allow a 2-3 day lead time.

Lightweight Protea Soil Blend Mix furnishes San Diego area Proteas with an excellent growing medium. This product provides adequate drainage and the acidic pH soil conditions that this specialty plant loves. Blended with Pumice, Mini Fir Bark and Mexican Coco Coir (pH =6) and screened into a sandy loam soil for the perfect substrate required by these drought tolerant plants.

Stabilized Gold DG is an attractive tan-colored, 3/8″ decomposed granite with the benefit of a binder added to create a stronger bond between the soil particles.  When installed per specifications, it provides a more stabilized surface that maintains its color, reduces track-ability and improves surface uniformity. It is great for walkways, driveways, bike paths, patios, and to accent your garden borders creating a natural look to your landscape.    

Gold DG is a decomposed granite known for its striking golden color and its ability to compact extremely well making it the perfect material for pathways, patios and areas where you want a natural and uniformly hardened surface. This product will add a nice, neat finishing touch to your landscape.

Blue/Gray DG is a Blue/gray-colored, 3/8″ decomposed granite that offers a different look and color for finishing your landscape. When installed using water, it forms a uniform hardened surface. It is great for walkways, patios, and to accent your garden borders. It can also be used for riding arenas and equestrian applications. 

Screened Fill Dirt consists of locally sourced native dirt that is processed using a 3/8” screen to remove medium to large rocks, sticks, clumps and debris. Occasionally you may find small rocks (approximately ¼” or larger in diameter) and small fragments of natural decomposing organic materials present in the native soils we screen. This does not impact the soil’s performance as fill. It is ideal for use in leveling soil surfaces, filling holes or building mounds and berms for general landscaping purposes.

Unscreened Fill Dirt is a great bargain if you don’t mind some rocks, sticks, or clumps. It is ideal to use when you need to level an area, fill a hole or build a mound or berm. It can also be used as a base for one of our custom blended products. 

Recycled Class II Base is made from recycled crushed concrete and asphalt. This product is a highly affordable, quality base for driveways, roads, parking lots and sidewalks. 

C-Mix can be used for a variety of concrete garden projects including walkways, patios, and outdoor staircases. This pre-mixed product combines aggregate and sand which is great for making small batches of concrete. 

Birdseye is premium grade 1/8″ gravel, consisting of smooth, rounded stones. This product is great for decorative ground cover, waterwise landscaping, bedding pipe, planter box and flower pot drainage, dog runs, and many other uses. 

3/4″ Rock is a great product for anywhere you need to improve drainage. It is ideal for a base for concrete slabs, french drains, large pipe bedding, dry wells, driveways and drainage ditches. 

Washed Concrete Sand is a high quality product that has been thoroughly rinsed and screened for a ready-mix. It can also be used for a base layer for walkways, patios when setting stepping stones, and rock borders. This clean, light sand will drain quickly when used for landscape applications. 

3/8″ Rock is a good choice for drainage blankets, pipe bedding, driveways and decorative landscape applications. The small rock size packs down a little flatter than the 3/4″ rock. 

Coco Coir – Medium Grade is North American-sourced, OMRI-listed, and superior to Asian coir with lower salinity levels and better quality control. An expanded medium grade coir, it is an excellent media for hydroponic production of vegetables and hemp. It’s a great choice for potted plants and propagation in trays, as well as blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, and any type of berry production. Use in soilless mixes at a ratio of 25-35% of the total volume, or add to your custom blend at your own desired rate.

Pumice is a light, 3/16″ gravel that has the ability to retain moisture while also providing good aeration. It will loosen heavy clay and provide structure when blended into the soil or container mixes. It can also be used as a decorative mulch. Be sure to ask us for tips on how you can best use this in your landscaping installation. 

Gypsum is a naturally occurring mineral which is great for breaking up heavy, dense soil and providing aeration. It is OMRI-listed and suitable for use as an amendment for potting soil or garden box blends and is ideal for reducing clay soil compaction which is common for San Diego County soils. Our Gypsum is registered with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) as Organic Input Material.

Perlite is a lightweight amendment that will break up compacted soil, enhance water retention, and improve root aeration to prevent root rot. It is made from naturally occurring volcanic rock and is sterile, chemically inert, and PH neutral. Perlite is economical and perfect for use in hydroponics, green roofs and for growing cuttings, seedlings and young plants. 

Black Owl Premium Organic Biochar is a soil amendment produced in WA from 100% clean, sustainably managed forest wood waste through pyrolysis. It reduces soil acidity and impurities while encouraging beneficial fungi and bacteria to proliferate. This product will improve soil structure, plant health and crop yields. It is OMRI-Listed and Organic Approved. Biochar is Available in 10 lb bags.

Cow Manure is unprocessed and available for a minor loading fee. It is a viable option for improving soil with nutrients and a high diversity microorganisms beneficial to plants, although it has not been heat treated to kill pathogens and weed seeds. For best results, till 1″ -2″ of manure into the top 12″ of soil at least 90 days before planting.
