Caltrans Contractor Grade Compost

California’s Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is in the business of making sure our roadways and waterways are safer, cleaner, beautiful, and able to withstand whatever Mother Nature throws their way. They have done a lot of research over the years to figure out what works and what doesn’t. As weather issues related to climate change become more apparent, they have worked through how to best combat those issues while also providing cost-friendly, quality solutions.

California also has an ongoing commitment to implement and strengthen policies for a Zero-Waste circular economy… of course. With all of this in mind, Caltrans has come to the conclusion that compost use provides many environmental benefits. When compost use is specified for their projects, Caltrans is reducing organic waste, greenhouse gases, water consumption, and the use of fertilizer. In addition, compost is nature’s workhorse in mitigating erosion and keeping our waterways clean. Lastly, it improves the soil, minimizes plant disease and pests. All of these things add up to cost savings. Using compost is just smart! Here at SPV Soils, we know all of this to be very true!

So, Caltrans decided to incorporate compost and mulch into their arsenal for combatting problems related to climate change! Not just any compost or mulch, though. Caltrans has strict specifications for all of the materials that are used in any of their projects. We are proud to have SPV Soils’ products included in that approved list of products!

Contractors working on Caltrans projects can purchase the following Caltrans-approved compost grades from us. Caltrans-approved compost requirements can be found on their Standards and Specifications document, “section 21-2.02K Compost” posted on their web site under Erosion Control section.

We are happy to deliver product to your job site or it can be picked up at our yard. Email us if you have any questions.
