by Craig Kolodge Ph.D. (aka Dr. K)

SPVS customer, Khoa, created an amazing vegetable garden using our Raised Garden Bed Mix.

I met Khoa at our January Free Product Giveaway Saturday event where he shared his recent gardening success story with me. His ambitious project involved building enclosed raised garden beds from scratch with a central walkway. He prepared the beds using our Raised Garden Bed Mix to produce an amazing vegetable bounty. Khoa, like many of our customers, purchased our Raised Garden Bed Mix and then mixed in his own materials to supply nitrogen to create a beautiful and productive vegetable garden.

When using a heavy compost-based growing media like our Raised Garden Bed Mix, we recommend amending it with a source of nitrogen. This will provide optimal vegetable growth and development. We sell both Ammonium Sulfate (21% nitrogen) and Feather Meal (12% nitrogen) at SPVS. For those looking for a readily available source of nitrogen, you can purchase them in 5 pound boxes at our yard.  For more details on how to apply nitrogen, check out: Creating a Super Garden with SPV Soils Raised Garden Bed Mix.

Khoa chose to use raw chicken manure from his farm to supply nitrogen in his garden. He sent me pictures and a video documenting the process. He also included a brief description of how he prepared the beds.

“I layered sticks at the bottom, then chicken manure, then my own compost that I made. I then lined with hardware cloth, and put 15 yards of your garden mix on top. And the results are there!”

Khoa, SPVS Customer

As you can see from the pictures, his garden is thriving and the vegetables are beautiful! You can see more photos and details on his Facebook page at Ok Farm Life or Instagram at #okfarmlife.
